Wisdom — Page 2
Verses 11–20 of 72
Ephesians 1:17 KJV
“That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.”
Context & Meaning
Paul prays for a spirit of wisdom, a supernaturally given capacity for seeing and understanding, specifically tied to knowing God more deeply. Wisdom and knowing God are inseparable.
Proverbs 12:15 KJV
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
Context & Meaning
Wisdom is teachable, it listens to counsel. The fool's defining characteristic is that he cannot be taught because he already thinks he is right. Openness to correction is the mark of wisdom.
Matthew 7:24 KJV
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.”
Context & Meaning
Jesus defines wisdom as building on rock, hearing and doing His words. The wise person and the fool both hear; only the wise person acts on what they hear, producing a life that stands under pressure.
Romans 11:33 KJV
“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
Context & Meaning
Paul's doxology at the end of his great theological argument acknowledges that God's wisdom is ultimately infinite and beyond full human comprehension, making lifelong pursuit of wisdom an inexhaustible pursuit.
Proverbs 13:20 KJV
“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”
Context & Meaning
Wisdom is transferable through relationship, deliberately choosing to walk with the wise is itself a wise decision. The company we keep shapes the wisdom (or foolishness) we develop.
Proverbs 2:1 KJV
“My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;”
Proverbs 2:2 KJV
“So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;”
Proverbs 2:3 KJV
“Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;”
Proverbs 2:4 KJV
“If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;”
Proverbs 2:5 KJV
“Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.”
